Seven lives lost as highest rainfall in decades turns Lahore into urban swamp
LAHORE: Relentless showers on Wednesday broke a 30-year-old record when the city got over 290mm of downpour inside a range of 10 hours, bringing about the passing of something like seven individuals, authorities said.
"Three individuals were shocked, two kicked the bucket after rooftops fell, and a kid suffocated after downpour water collected," Punjab break Boss Pastor Mohsin Naqvi told columnists in Lahore.
The interim CM reported that seven people had died in the rain in an update posted to his official Twitter handle.
According to Commissioner Lahore Mohammad Ali Randhawa, climate change and a strong monsoon are to blame for the city's 291 millimeters of rain, which was recorded in more than a dozen locations.
He added that the Water and Sanitation Authority (Wasa) Lahore and the city administration are fully committed to ensuring the drainage of rainwater.
According to Randhawa, "Lahore received the maximum rainfall of 256 mm earlier this year on June 26," and "238 mm was recorded in Lahore in 2022."
The commissioner stated that Lahore received 288 millimeters of rain in 2018, adding that the city has not experienced such precipitation in the past 30 years.
In the meantime, MD Wasa Ghafran Ahmed stated that once the rain stopped, all low-lying areas would be cleared within a few hours.
As per Wasa Storm Control Room, the city's Lakhsmi Chowk region gotten 291mm of downpour, Nishter Town 277mm, Qurtaba Chowk 270mm, Gulshan-e-Ravi 268mm, Pani Wala Talab 268mm, Johar Town 260mm, Tajpura 249mm, and Iqbal Town 232mm.
The city was paralyzed by the rain that began earlier in the morning because all of the major roads and connecting streets were flooded, making it impossible to commute. On the roads, the water was so deep that many cars broke down.
While the electricity supply was cut, rainwater entered houses in low-lying Shah Jamal and Tajpura neighborhoods, making life even more miserable.
Punjab Chief Minister pays a visit to the city Chief Minister Naqvi stated that record-breaking precipitation had resulted in urban flooding and that heavy downpours had overflowed the canal.
"All members of the cabinet and administration are on the ground to clear the water. While in Lahore to oversee relief efforts, the chief minister stated, "I am also monitoring the situation in the field and receiving updates from all over Lahore continuously."
